10 Tips for Healthy Eyes

The National Eye Institute provides great tips on how to protect your eye health:

1. Have a Comprehensive Dilated Eye Exam
Many common eye diseases often won't show any warning signs. This may lead you to think your vision is fine, but visiting your eye care professional for a comprehensive dilated eye exam is really the only way to be sure.

2. Know Your Family's Eye Health History
Many diseases are hereditary so it's important to talk to your family members about the history of their eye health.

3. Eat Right to Protect Your Sight
Healthy eyes need a rich diet of fruits, leafy greens, and omega-3 fatty acids. Be sure to check out the many recipes that we feature on our blog!

4. Maintain a Healthy Weight
A healthy weight will decrease your risk of developing diabetes or other conditions that lead to vision loss.

5. Wear Protective Eyewear
When playing sports or doing activities around the home, wear safety glasses, goggles, shields, or eye guards for protection.

6. Avoid Smoking
Smoking increases your risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataract, and other optic nerve damage. Don't do it!

7. Wear Your Shades
Seek sunglasses that block out 99 to 100% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.

8. Rest Your Eyes
If you stare at a computer all day, look away every 20 minutes for about 20 seconds to reduce eyestrain.

9. Clean Your Hands & Contacts Properly
Always wash your hands before putting in or removing your contact lenses to avoid infection and disinfect/replace lenses as instructed.

10. Workplace Eye-Safety
Wear appropriate eyewear in the workplace.

Taking supplements that contain ingredients such as lutein and zeaxanthin is also a great way to help your eyes stay healthy! Click below to check out our supplements!
