Tips for Dry Eye in Cold Weather

According to the National Eye Institute, nearly five million Americans aged 50 years and older are estimated to have a condition known as dry eye. During the cold winter months, the condition can become even more aggravated. In addition to taking a dry eye supplement, there are other ways to provide comfort this season.

  1. Use a humidifier - While your house is nice and toasty, the increased heat will make the air dryer. Using a humidifier will help add moisture to the air and provide some relief to your dry eyes and skin.
  2. Get Enough Sleep - Your body uses sleep to recharge, especially your eyes. Getting at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night allows your eyes to rest and naturally hydrate using your body's own tears.
  3. Stay Hydrated - Drinking enough water helps your body function as it was meant to. Whether it is a hot cup of tea or cold ice water, it is believed by most that your body needs at least eight 8oz glasses every day. This is equivalent to half of a gallon of water.
  4. Wear sunglasses - Wearing eye protection is just as important during the Winter as it is during the Summer. If you live in a colder state, proper sunglasses are even more important due to the reflective nature of snow. Your sunglasses will also protect your eyes from winds and other elements while outside.
