Understanding the Role of Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Meso-Zeaxanthin

This advanced supplement combines the power of lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin to help maintain healthy vision and protect your eyes from age-related changes. In the retina, lutein and zeaxanthin play an important role in helping to filter out blue light.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in green leafy vegetables as well as vegetables that are orange and yellow. Meso-zeaxanthin is usually not found readily in food sources but can be extracted from naturally occurring lutein found in marigolds. One of only ways to increase meso-zeaxanthin concentrations is through supplementation.

To understand the role of lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin in the eye, it’s important to understand where the highest concentrations of these carotenoids are in the human body. Lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin are all naturally occurring carotenoids that are only found in high concentrations in the eye, specifically the macula. Vision starts with the capturing of light, and visual pigments in the eye are responsible for starting the process of seeing.  In the eye, the macula is responsible for sharp visual acuity and color discrimination.

Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) is a measure of concentration of specific pigments within the macula of the eye. In a clinical study, MOPD levels positively increased with consistent supplementation of lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. Other studies have suggested that low macular pigment levels can eventually lead to age-related eye aging and that supplements helped to increase macular pigment levels.
